black and yellow

Hi Internets! Its been a crazy past 10 days at the Compton house, but I'm back and so happy to see you! My mom was in town this weekend, so I took yesterday off and we had awesome girly adventures at the outlet mall, and went on an epic hunt for birthday cake oreos, alas, we found none. Since my mom was in town and this morning was the last few moments I had with her, simple was the plan for the day. Nothing says easy like a black pencil skirt and flats, add a fun pop of color blouse (which is actually a too short dress) and a cardi and I'm good to go.

Having my mama in town this weekend was a BLAST!! Not only is she smart, funny, sassy, and a thrift store good luck charm (hello Rebeca Minkoff bag!), she is also one of my most favorite people. This weekend was one of the most fun and rejuvenating weekends I've had in months. You ladies who live close to your mama's are very lucky. I'm pretty sure I'd give almost anything for Austin and Denver to be closer.

Twins!

You know whats fun? Accidentally dressing like your dog. I did that today, but didn't really notice it until I was editing photos. I am however, totally okay with it, I mean who better to dress like than an adorable little lady? I found this shirt on super clearance at Old Navy over the weekend, I don't remember seeing it when it was full price, but I'm glad I found it, its a fun pattern and a different color for me, so I'm excited to branch out a bit with it next time.

You may have noticed the new photo location. This would be just a small section of this seasons patio garden. What you see here are some of the flowers I planted, our basil plants, jalapenos, and our big 3 year old rosemary. I'm really excited to see how things do this year with a full patio and direct sun, I'm hoping for many delicious home grown veggies in a few months.

My fashion inspiration, Petunia Jean.

Statement Necklace

Have I mentioned I have awesome coworkers? Because I do. Not only are they great to work with, they are also very fashionable and willing to share where they find things. For example, this awesome necklace. My coworker Kelley was wearing it last week and I feel in love. She shared that she found it at World Market for $10! Obviously, I had to take a trip this weekend to see if I could find my own, and thank goodness I did. I just love it and while Pete isn't the biggest fan, I can wait to wear it all summer long.

I won't be around the interwebs tomorrow night, we've got a hot date with a big group of friends for the Hunger Games at the Alamo Draft House and I am super excited! They have a special menu to go with the movie, so I will be eating Basil Wrapped Goat Cheese, Katniss' Lamb and Plum Stew, and Mellark's Bakery's Strawberry Upside-Down Cake, while drinking some sangria and enjoying the movie. Yeah, its going to be awesome.

Terrifically Tall

Over the weekend I found these great wedges at Target. I can't explain it, but they were the only pair in the store, in my size, and on sale for $8, yet online they are still full price. I'm pretty sure this pair was destined for my closet. I am not normally a lady who wears 5 inch heels, but I figured for the price, I could take the chance. They were actually fairly comfortable but then again I spent most of my day sitting at my desk sorting data. Maybe next time I'll be brave and try them out on a busy day.

This evening we went to Lowe's after I got home from work. Its time to begin gardening here in Central Texas and we're really excited about it this year. We finally have a yard to spread out in a bit, so we're going big. I can't wait for delicious tomatoes, peppers, herbs, onions, and lettuce, basically its going to be awesome! I also decided I'd try potting geraniums this year, so hopefully I'll have pretty hanging pots of flowers in a few months!

linen blend

There was an event at work today, I didn't go, but because there was a chance VIPs might be in the office, there were no jeans allowed. Obviously this meant it was time to pull out my bright pink linen blend skirt. Add my go to stripes and leopard flats, and bam a fun Friday dress up outfit.

I snagged this skirt thrifting last summer, but hadn't worn it until now. I tend to do that with thrifted pieces, you get home, wash them, they get put away and sometimes I forget to wear them for months, but I'm okay with that, it made wearing it today that much better since it was new! Speaking of thrifting, I am SO excited for the TxSC Thrifting Workshop next weekend! Gotta say being that its in Austin and I'll be learning tricks in my own neck of the woods makes it even better! Don't worry, I won't let my finds from that adventure languish in my closet for 6 months!

Misty Morn

I'd like to thank my awesome little sister for this top. I wasn't going to even try it on, but she talked me into it and then told me the purple was better than the blue. Goodness, having a younger sister is awesome.

It was super misty this morning but thanks to some wicked awesome hair spray my hair looked like I'd lightly placed it in an electric outlet, instead of a total frizzy mess. Thankfully these photos were taken within 3 minutes of walking outside, so the frizz hadn't won yet. Also, sweet little neighbor kitty wanted to be on the blog again and who am I to deny that sweet face?

Justice, Faith, & Power

Happy Mardi Gras!! Being from New Orleans, I always bring the party on Mardi Gras day, my coworkers enjoyed delicious King Cake and beads for everyone! They also enjoyed my themed, color blocked outfit. Purple, green, and gold just seem to go better together this time of year.

Mardi Gras colors were not only chosen because they look great together, but they also stand for something! Purple is justice, green is faith, and gold is power. Basically today, I was rocking a Kanye West song. Awesome.

Tied up with a bow

Mondays are great when you spent the previous 4 days sick with the stomach flu. Somehow my coffee tasted better and even the work I had to catch up on from being out on Friday was more fulfilling. There's just something awesome about being able to eat after 3 days of nothing but toast and apple sauce.

Being that today I was in a celebratory mood I felt I should wear a big bow around my neck. This is one of the pieces from the Jason Wu line I wasn't sure I was going to keep, as I don't love how it looks with pants and that's what I was hoping to wear it with. However, it looks great tucked into a pencil skit, so I think its a keeper.

Stripes & Equality

I've had this shirt for over 6 months and this is the first time I've worn it and I have no idea why. Its got a great cut, a classic pattern, and its totally work appropriate. One of my goals this year is to wear everything in my closet and pulling this out last night reminded me that I have a lot of hidden gems.

I decided today after watching this, that I soon plan to venture into a JC Penney. I've never really shopped there before, but if a company can be awesome and stand up to bigots, then I am happy to give them a shot.

Gray Confusion

Happy February. I always like February better than January, so I was quite happy to say hello to the month of hearts, presidents, and this year, a whole extra day! Today called for simple with a little color. It was a day of much paperwork and no fun lunch plans, so simple was the way to go. I love a good plaid shirt and I liked the way the bright blue on this one popped with the neutral gray and black.

These shoes confuse me. I don't wear them very much because I don't like the way they look with black tights (is this weird?) I bought them hoping they would be another neutral option for winter, it didn't work out that way, so they sit in my closet unloved. I thought today with my nude pantyhose, they would work and they did. However, throughout the day I realized that somehow the size 6 is too big. I own this shoe in 4 colors, all size 6, and this is the only pair that is too big. Maybe I will try again with some thicker tights, or wait til summer and hope I can make it work.

Politics and Style

Nothing like style blogging while watching the SOTU. Man I love politics. Any who, that doesn't have much to do with my outfit for today, but oh well. Today was another "I had everything planed and at 7am it all fell apart" so I went with my go to, pencil skirt, print top, fun cardi. Boom, good to go.

To give the look a little extra oomph I put my new statement necklace with it, nothing adds glamor like a big necklace with pearls and shiny black gems. Thank you Banana Republic outlet for having such a fantastic sale!
Also, I found a place to sit for photos, pretty exciting stuff going on around the Compton house these days!

quick-ish

Ever have one of those mornings where you know exactly what you're going to wear and then you put it on and hate it? That was my morning, thankfully I was quick-ish on my feet and decided to give my new (to me) herringbone skirt a try. I'm not sure I loved it, but it worked in a pinch and I'm fairly certain everything goes with a good chambray shirt.

I wish I had something else interesting to say, but I don't have much. Today was about making phone calls and tomorrow will be about making folders. Ahhh fund-raising, the fun never ends!
Now I'm going to curl on up on the couch and continue reading Catching Fire.

The higher the heel

I'm wearing new heels today. I love them (as does everyone in my office, compliments are the best!) but they are HIGH and I've warned everyone I may fall down at any moment. But, isn't the saying "The higher the heel, the closer to God"? If that's the case, then I think I'll be just fine.

Tonight is my youngest brother-in-laws 21st birthday dinner (the joys of marrying into a big family is my new siblings-in-law out number all my cousins, so there is always something to celebrate!) The goal is to last in the new shoes not only for work, but for the dinner too. I'm nearly certain there is nothing classier than eating sushi in coral pumps, I'm excited!
