black and yellow

Hi Internets! Its been a crazy past 10 days at the Compton house, but I'm back and so happy to see you! My mom was in town this weekend, so I took yesterday off and we had awesome girly adventures at the outlet mall, and went on an epic hunt for birthday cake oreos, alas, we found none. Since my mom was in town and this morning was the last few moments I had with her, simple was the plan for the day. Nothing says easy like a black pencil skirt and flats, add a fun pop of color blouse (which is actually a too short dress) and a cardi and I'm good to go.

Having my mama in town this weekend was a BLAST!! Not only is she smart, funny, sassy, and a thrift store good luck charm (hello Rebeca Minkoff bag!), she is also one of my most favorite people. This weekend was one of the most fun and rejuvenating weekends I've had in months. You ladies who live close to your mama's are very lucky. I'm pretty sure I'd give almost anything for Austin and Denver to be closer.

After

I did not wear this to work. I wore the top half, but the bottom was a black pencil skirt and black tights, rather predictable but it was a Monday of a Monday so it worked. This outfit is what I wore on the super awesome Monday night date that the Mr. and I went on. Delicious Mexican food at El Arroyo and grocery shopping. Pretty sure that's the definition of a married person date, but it was fun and chill and perfect.

I had a whole other outfit planned for this morning, but as I said, it was a Monday and it just didn't work out. So I dug around in my closet and found this top that I'd totally forgotten I had. I bought it on a whim a few years ago and wore it to death last year, but since we moved in September, I've not worn it. Bringing it back this morning was like finding an old friend.

Navy Dots

Please excuse my faces this morning, it was cold and windy and terrible outside. I am a big ol' wuss and there is no way I could do this every day if it was cold for half the year. I salute you northern blogging friends! Nothing big was going on today, but I love this dress and it seemed like a good day to wear it, and it was. I made many phone calls and its nice to feel pretty when making cold calls.

I put this outfit together this morning without thinking too much about it and then I saw this on Pinterest and suddenly I felt really smart! I knew when I got this dress it would be a classic piece I'd have for years. I think that is one of my favorite things about Ruche, the pieces are fresh but all of them have a classic element which makes them much more than one season items. I can't wait to feel smart wearing this dress for years to come!

Red Alert

Happy MLK day! I love a good government holiday, it means a nice leisurely day off. All I did today was finish the Hunger Games, run out right after and buy Catching Fire, and then go to the grocery store. It was an exciting day, let me tell you. Since we weren't up to much, I obviously needed to dress up a bit. I love my red jeans but am not yet brave enough to wear them for work, so this was the perfect solution. I think the lady in the yogurt aisle was very impressed.

Today is also my dad's birthday, and I wanted to send him some love! Happy Birthday to the man who did my hair, watched my fashion shows after every shopping trip, and would tell me when the colors in my outfit didn't quite go. He is the best daddy as girl could ask for!

This is my neighbors cat, she wanted to be on the blog and with her fabulous tortie coat, I couldn't say no.

Mixer

This outfit is a combination of Pinterest inspirations, camel and leopard and polka dots and leopard. When I got dressed this morning I thought this look might be a little loud for me, as I am not typically a pattern mixer. I added the owl necklace to break things up a bit and draw attention. I'm guessing it worked since the owl was the only thing anyone commented on. By 5 today I was really pleased I went out of my comfort zone, yay for breaking out of fashion ruts and trying new things!

Polka Dots & a Bow

Thursdays can be tough and Thursdays the first week back after a nice vacation are the toughest. So when I looked at my closet this morning, I wanted simple. Nothing says simple like a nice black pencil skirt. I added a fun blouse on top and even though I wasn't super excited about the day, I looked it. Besides nothing makes a day better than polka dots and a big bow.

We all know I love Target, obviously, 2/3rds of today's outfit is Target. However, can I just say they've knocked it out of the park with the Jason Wu collection and I've only seen a handful of pieces. Since this collection launches on a Sunday, I'm thinking I'll be one of the loonies at the store as soon as they open! That polka dot and pearl dress is mine!

Nothing like a little wool

It continues to be cold here in the Lone Star State, which is just fine with me! Cold means I can finally wear all the awesome winter things I got on insane super sale this summer. I know it was a little crazy to buy a wool skirt in July, but I did it and 5 months later it was perfect and super cute!

You see that infinity scarf? My Mama made it for me last Christmas. I found it today when I pulled out the wool coat and my goodness was I happy to see it! Not only is it super warm and an awesome color, its like getting a hug from my mom all day long and nothing is better than that.

My joyful face when I got to put my coat on!

red skirt

So a while back I got this red skirt and it took me a long time to figure out how I wanted to style it. You see while I love red, I don't wear it very often, but I really love this skirt so I'm hoping to find many different ways to rock it this winter.

I fell in love with this shirt at Old Navy a few months ago but I thought it was a bit flimsy for the price so I walked away, but I stalked it online until it went on sale and I pounced. I love the little polka dots and it looks just as cute with jeans as it does dressed up a bit.

Hunt.Gather.Puppy School

This awesome vintage mustard top came from the fabulous Hunt.Gather.Style pop up shop I went to over the weekend. Going to the shop is what finally pushed me over the "I should start a Style Blog" edge. A lot of my favorite style bloggers were at the shop and seeing them in person and realizing that we were at the same event, all making things work for us, made me realize I too could show the world (or a handful of people on the Internet) that I can get dressed!

I wore the top with a polka dot pencil skirt. I've had hips my whole life and love how pencil skirts flatter my figure, plus they make any outfit look professional. The bag is my every day work bag and the wedges are my most favorite, seriously, most comfortable heels ever.

I am in love with vintage owl jewelry, but I'm picky so I don't have a ton of pieces. I got this one from Etsy about a week ago and just love him and I thought he would compliment the mustard nicely with his bright green eyes.

After work today we had puppy school, and since Petunia Jean is the cutest I thought I would show off my puppy school style as well.
Puppy school doesn't really require a lot, I keep it simple jorts & a tee with Toms, we run around a lot and you never know when a pup might have an accident.
